Pope Francis: Cor Unum, aid for Haiti population. First contribution 100,000 dollars

“After Matthew, the hurricane hitting the Caribbean region, and in particular, the land of Haiti with extraordinary power in the last few days, causing 1,000 (maybe more) ascertained victims, Pope Francis, , decided to send the initial contribution of 100,000 dollars to help the population in this phase of emergency, through the Pontifical Council ‘Cor Unum’”. It was made known by the Press Room of the Holy See. “Such amount will be distributed in collaboration with the Apostolic Nunciature through the local Church in the dioceses mostly affected by this natural disaster; it will be used to support aid actions in favour of the flooded, and it is meant to be the first and immediate concrete expression of spiritual feelings of solidarity and paternal encouragement of the Supreme Pontiff for the people and territories struck by the disaster”. Moreover, the note from the Pontifical Council says: “That contribution is part of an aid network taking immediate action in the whole Catholic Church, and involving several bishops’ conferences as well as many charity organisations. Caritas Haiti, in connection with Caritas Internationalis, has immediately launched an emergency appeal for aid to 2,700 families (13,500 people), for buying and distributing 2,700 food kits, for the supply of 2,700 sanitary kits, and to activate programmes to advise and sensitise the population on prevention of infectious diseases”.
