Europe: 20th anniversary of the “Delors” think-tank. Letta, “efforts to take part in the revival of the EU”

The French Jacques Delors Institute, a “European think-tank” born in 1996 on the resolve of Delors at the end of his tenure as president of the European Commission to produce surveys and ideas and to contribute to the political progress of the EU and the debate among its citizens, turns twenty. “20 years of Europe”, a report about the institute’s work (www.institutdelors.eu), has been published to celebrate this special birthday. “The current criticism of the EU is one more reason to take part in its revival even more convincingly”, Enrico Letta, president of the Institute, writes in the foreword to the Report, which provides an overview of the efforts made by the Institute in the three main lines of reflection: “reconciling the EU and its citizens”, “reconciling competition, cooperation and solidarity”, and “asserting the European Union’s role in globalisation”. Saying “Jacques Delors Institute” now means having over 900 publications under one’s belt, 150 partner projects, two operating units (Paris and Berlin) and initiatives in several European countries, and a 1.4 million euros’ turnover. The agenda includes many opportunities to talk about Brexit, Ttip, democracy, social rights, single market and free trade, and to look ahead the day after a meeting in Paris to celebrate the twentieth anniversary on “the political future of the EU”, where guests included the president of the EU Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, the French President, Françoise Hollande, and the Prime Minister, Manuel Valls.
