Colombia: peace talks between government and Eln starting now. Support from the Church and Sant’Egidio

While we wait to know how the new negotiations with the guerrilla group Farc will go on after the victory of votes against, at the referendum on the peace treaty, Colombia officially gives the green lights to the peace process with the other group, the National Liberation Army. As announced by SIR a few days ago, the delegates of the government and the leaders of ELN met in Caracas. Alongside, there were also the delegations of the Colombian Bishops Conference and Comunità di Sant’Egidio that have got proactively involved to push the situation along. The delegations will officially settle in Ecuador’s capital city Quito, where the negotiations will take place on 27th October, while the talks will start on 4th November. The countries that will monitor such peace talks will be Norway, Chile, Cuba and Brazil. In announcing this, Colombia’s president Juan Manuel Santos, winner of the latest Nobel Peace Prize, pointed out that ELN released its prisoners, a gesture that was a prerequisite to start the talks. Currently, ELN has fewer armed men than Farc (1,450 versus the bout 7 thousand of the main guerrilla group) but is more deeply rooted in society.
