Austria: St. Pölten, diocese and Caritas, mobile hospice to assist in the grieving process

Four stations for the mobile hospices that help people to face bereavement, grief and the problems of terminally-ill people and their families: this is an idea organised by the diocese of St. Pölten with Caritas from 16th October to 3rd November at the parish church of Kirchberg an der Pielach, and from 7th to 22nd November in the cloister of St. Pölten’s Cathedral. “Here, people can write and commit to memory their painful experiences, take a tour at the wailing wall, a place, a story”, explains Elisabeth Riegler, coordinator of the hospice for St. Pölten. The first step in the experience will be the “Wailing Wall” that will be covered with writings with the reasons for pain, the laments. The next step will be “The lake of tears”: people can cry while pouring water on some stones, on which they write their mournful thoughts. Water, the symbol of cleanliness and a new life, will bring on to the next station, “memory lane”. Here people can say a few thank-you words for the life spent with their relatives, by writing on coloured sheets laid out with a glass stone on a road that stands for time and experience. The fourth station is that of the “lucky bean in the pocket”, inspired by the fairy tale of a man who, through a handful of beans in his pockets, slowly learns to rediscover happy times. In 2015, the volunteer staff of the mobile hospice service led 329 terminally-ill people and mourning relatives through 6 thousand tours.
