Slovakia: Church Organizations helping migrants regardless of their religious beliefs

(Bratislava) Putting an emphasis on the formation of public opinion to make the inhabitants more sensitive towards the problems of migrants and refugees, and taking concrete steps to facilitate the integration of migrants into the Slovak society regardless of their religious beliefs. These are the pillars of the efforts of the Catholic Church in Slovakia towards migrants and refugees coming to the country. “It is necessary to help each person in need or in a difficult situation, especially those whose life is endangered by conflicts and persecution in their homeland, regardless of their religious beliefs”, says Fr. Martin Kramara, spokesman for the Bishops’ Conference of Slovakia, pointing to the fact that a working group on migration issues has been established within the structures of the Catholic Church, focusing not just on the concrete help provided by several ecclesial institutions, but also and above all on the positive formation of public opinion in this regard. According to Radovan Gumulak, general secretary of Caritas, this institution has provided specific services, assisting the integration process of 270 refugees so far, 90% of whom are Muslim. “Representatives of the Muslim community have also been invited to the latest session of the councils and commissions of the Bishops’ Conference, with the aim to start a dialogue with this religious minority in Slovakia and to be able to better coordinate the integration process at all levels”, says Radovan Gumulak.
