Poland: don Hoffman (WYD2016), “Registrations for visit to Auschwitz beyond all expectations”

“The number of young people who want to visit the Nazi camp of Auschwitz has exceeded all expectations”: this has been stated by don Piotr Hoffman, in charge of the WYD2016 for the diocese of Bielsko Biala and Zywiec, where the Holocaust Museum is located. As reported by the prelate, the expected 133 thousand visits, for which one must register at http://mlodzi.duszpasterstwa.bielsko.pl/auschwitz/, sold out in a very short time. So the organisers decided to add another 170 thousand places for visitors from 20th to 28th July, and from 1st to 3rd August. “To ease the flow of so many people, we have planned a special 1.30-hour trail to see the most important places without visiting the insides of the sheds”, explains Andrzej Kacorzyk, deputy director of the Museum, who broke the news that a special exhibition will also be set up on the place to learn more about the history of the camp. “I hope that, for these hundreds of thousands of young people of the WYD who will come to Poland to ask important questions and find good answers, the visit to Auschwitz will be not only an important history lesson but a powerful personal experience too”, wishes the director of the Museum, Piotr M.A. Cywinski. Built in 1940 for Polish prisoners, the Nazi camp became an extermination camp for Polish people in 1942. The total number of victims has been estimated at somewhere between 1 million 100 thousand and 1 million 300 thousand people.
