Portugal: Lisbon, night course “Philosophers speaks of God too”

Lisbon’s Chapel do Rato is promoting a free night course called “Philosophers speaks of God too”, during which the theoretical arguments of twelve intellectuals will be presented and discussed every Monday from 11th January to 2nd May. “Not all philosophers who we thought were relevant could be included, but the selection that has been made reflects very different doctrinal positions, and such as to adhere to the idea suggested by the title we have chosen”, the organisers state. Taking advantage of the availability of some university lecturers, the course means to “investigate dialogue about God through the authors and texts that will be studied every week”. The first guest will be José Pedro Serra from the Faculty of Literature of Lisbon University, who will speak of Plato, while the meetings will be closed by Paulo Borges from the same Faculty, who will talk about the philosophy of George Agostinho Baptista da Silva, a Portuguese poet and essayist. Lectures on St Thomas Aquinas and St Augustine will be held by Marta Mendonça from the Faculty of Social and Human Science of Nova University, and by father Henrique Noronha Galvã, from the Catholic University of Lisbon, respectively. “The course has mainly been prompted by the great interest aroused in our community by the cycle of lectures ‘Conversations about God’”, the coordinator of the initiative, Maria Luisa Ribeiro Ferreira, explained.
