Schengen: Juncker (Commission), “Rules easily breached, we’ll pay a price”. More hotspots

Strasburgo: Jean-Claude Juncker (Commissione Ue) al Parlamento europeo

(Strasburg) “Today, Schengen rules are easily breached” with new walls and limits to EU internal circulation. “Tomorrow we’ll realise the price we’ll have to pay for that, in economic terms, too”, because free circulation is a requirement of the community single market. From Strasburg, that is Jean-Claude Juncker’s response to the continuous initiatives of EU member states – Austria, Slovenia and Croatia, the most recent – announcing national border strict control under migration pressures. From the headquarters of the European Parliament, the President of the Commission says that EU member states often deal with migration with different decisions and “divergent interest”, while “common response would be necessary, exactly to reduce migration flows and preserve the Schengen space threatened by them”. The message (not new, but clear) includes indications about more steps to be made: complete the hotspot network to identify migrants coming from the Mediterranean and the Balkan route (flows went on tonight in Turkey, Greece and Macedonia), support Balkan countries, accomplish agreements with Turkey, foster cooperation with African partners. Juncker insists: “We need common customs and coast guards” with EU flag. However, several member states do not agree with that, and oppose such proposal.
