Poland: Holy year in prisons with pastoral initiatives, preparation to sacraments and pilgrimages

The person of the Polish Bishops’ Conference in charge of the pastoral for detainees, Father Pawel Wojtas, is convinced of the “need to show detainees the value of the grace given them by the Pontiff during the Holy Year of Mercy”, and of the importance of the “relationship between the detainee and his/her confessor”. Core celebrations of the Divine Mercy Sunday (3 April) are taking place at Bydgoszcz penitentiary; however, all the other prisons, in the whole national territory, are preparing specific programmes meant to intensify pastoral commitment of detainees. In Wojkowice, the biggest penitentiary in the Silesia region with over one thousand detainees, the Holy Year celebration plan was managed by chaplain Father Rafal Madej together with prison’s Vice Director Lieutenant Colonel Hanna Ogonek-Obierzynska. Every day, the prison’s broadcasting station broadcasts fragments from the Diary of Saint Faustina Kowalska. Furthermore, more and more prisoners are taking part in prayer meetings and catechesis; they take advantage of the opportunity to be prepared to approach the sacraments of baptism and confirmation. In the Holy Year, the Corpus Domini procession will be celebrated at the Wojkowice penitentiary for the first time, while a few detainees will be able to take part in pilgrimages to well-known sanctuaries. Moreover, a national conference dedicated to the importance of pastoral commitment in prisons is scheduled in June.
