The Netherlands: “The resource of engagement”, the Churches’ commitment to combating poverty

On Friday 22 January in Houten, the Churches in the Netherlands will present “the resource of engagement”, the first in a series of books dedicated to the Churches’ commitment to combating poverty in the country. As the Council of Christian Churches explained in a statement, the book “includes 70 initiatives selected from a vast range of similar projects”: from offering meals to refugees to organising holidays for people with limited financial resources, from engaging in politics to dedicating special attention to children. The examples are preceded by an introduction by Klaas van der Kamp, general secretary of the Council of Churches in the Netherlands, and Herman Noordegraaf, professor at the Protestant Theological University. The editorial project is part of a wider initiative called “Intersection of Churches and poverty” (www.knooppuntkerkenenarmoede.nl), a space for “interreligious dialogue” and reflection to “make visible the Churches’ great commitment against poverty in the Netherlands, to encourage those who are already engaged, and to support those who would like to help in the awareness of being part of a wider movement of charity and justice”, the new website reads. Speakers at the presentation of the book and of the initiative will include, after a brief theological introduction, the mayor of Houten, Wouter de Jong, and the president of the Social-Christian Congress, Josine Westerbeek.
