Lithuania: Bishops’ Conference, National Congress on Mercy in May

The Plenary Assembly of the Lithuanian Bishops, which took place in Kaunas on 11 January, was almost entirely focused on the special events organised for the Holy Year of Mercy. In the “Informative Report” of the secretary of the Bishops’ Conference, which has just been released, particular reference is made to the culminating event, namely the National Congress on Mercy, which will take place in Vilnius on 7-8 May 2016. According to the programme announced by the president of the Bishops, Mgr. Gintaras Grusas, the first day will include thematic conferences and workshops in various churches in Vilnius, followed by a solemn Mass in the square adjacent to the Cathedral, and an evening concert. On Sunday, 8 May, participants in the Congress will make a procession through the streets of the capital to “invoke God’s mercy on the entire world”. The event will end with a Eucharistic celebration. Since participants from across Lithuania are expected to attend, every diocese has appointed representatives in charge of coordinating the preparatory work for the Congress. Mercy will also be the main theme of the Prayer Sunday for Lithuanians in the world (6 March), during which prayers written by Lithuanians living abroad will be read out in churches. Even the event “A different Valentine’s Day”, which has now become a tradition among young people in Lithuania, will focus on mercy.
