Germany: “Let us build a house for all”, new Missio campaign for refugees

Prayers together, exotic recipes, games for children, German classes, and places to meet and exchange views with local communities – the humanitarian organisation Missio of the German Church has launched a new national campaign to support one million refugees who have arrived in Germany over the past year. “Let us build a house for all” is the title of the campaign, run in cooperation with parishes, schools, kindergartens and sports centres, which will host meetings with the refugees, as Gregor von Furstenberg, vice-president of Missio, explained in his presentation. “In Europe we are currently challenged by the need to offer dignified living conditions to people of other countries and cultures – Mr von Furstenberg said –, because never before in recent history are so many people fleeing war, oppression, and hunger, and are knocking at our door”. Missio invites Catholic communities to organise, in their specific areas, parties, school projects, and opportunities for a “culture of encounter”. Privileged places include kindergarten and school rooms for German teaching, lounges and living rooms to know and exchange views with others, dining rooms and canteens to taste the refugees’ different cuisines, playing fields and recreation rooms to have fun, and quiet places to pray together.
