Anglicans: Primates praying in Canterbury Cathedral. Tweet: “We are One Family”

Anglican Primates from across the world, summoned by Archbishop Justin Welby of Canterbury, concluded their first day of meeting with a Vespers service at Canterbury Cathedral yesterday evening. They will be meeting in private until 16 January, with a press conference scheduled for Friday. Yesterday evening, two photos were released by the press office showing the Anglican Primates praying together in Canterbury Cathedral. The meeting was called by Archbishop Welby in September “so that all Primates may pray and reflect together on matters of common interest”. The two “souls” of the Anglican Communion across the world are present in Canterbury, the “more progressive soul” of Anglicanism in Northern America, and the “traditional” soul, linked to the GAFCON network, which boycotted the 2008 Lambeth Conference as a form of protest against the blessing of same-sex relationships and women’s ordinations. The challenge now is to keep these two souls together to avoid divisions or even schism. “We are One Family” is the tweet sent by the Anglican Communion yesterday evening, which calls on Anglicans across the world to pray for “unity”.
