Portugal: Apelo Association, “Light a candle for families who have lost a child”

The Apelo Association, which supports mourning people, families and communities at the national level, has invited Portuguese citizens to “light a candle” on 13 December “for all families who have suffered the tragic loss of a child”. The initiative involves a range of activities both in Lisbon and in the town of Aveiro. To mark the special character of the event, the capital will host “an intimate concert at the Mãe d’Água complex with the participation of Portuguese singer and songwriter André Sardet, ambassador of the event”. The town of Aveiro, by contrast, will host a “performance by the choral group Voz Nua, which will take place inside the Church of Mercy”, the organisers explain. The aim of the event, entitled “Light a Candle”, is to “commemorate the children and young people who have lost their lives”; it finds its origins in the global project established in 1996 through the Internet, promoted every year by the American Association “Compassionate Friends”, which wants to “unite families and friends from across the world”. According to a document from the Apelo Association, “it is the largest initiative of its kind ever undertaken”, and all Portuguese people are invited to light a candle at 7pm to “generate, for at least one hour, a wave of light worldwide”.
