Climate: EU Commission and EU Parliament at Paris climate talks. Cañete, “binding agreement”

The EU Commission and the EU Parliament are taking part in the Paris climate talks, which today have got into their second, decisive week. The European Commission above all, which represents the EU at Cop21, strengthens its efforts to “achieve a global and legally binding climate agreement”. Miguel Arias Cañete, commissioner for climate and energy action, who leads the delegation, pointed out that “the European Union’s efforts for climate change and global warming are economic too. Most funds for climate and most public aids to development across the world come“ from the EU budget, actually. But, as Cañete insisted, its efforts are mainly focussed on the future: by 2020 “at least 20% of the EU budget will be allocated to climate”. In addition, the EU will support climate initiatives in the developing countries with 14 billion euros until 2020. In addition, from today 15 MEPs will be officially attending Cop21 and will personally talk with Cañete. Today, the commissioner for international cooperation and development, Neven Mimica, is attending a session about sustainable energies. Tomorrow, the deputy president, Maros Sefcovic, will attend a debate on cities and regions.
