Pope Francis: at Audience, “Coexistence of wealth and poverty is a scandal”

“Everywhere, the coexistence of wealth and poverty is a scandal, a disgrace to humanity”. Pope Francis said this speaking off the cuff at today’s Audience, in which he remebered the legs of his journey to Africa. The Pontiff spoke of Nairobi, “the biggest city in Eastern Africa, where wealth and misery coexist, and where the United Nations Office for the Environment is based, which I visited”. “But this is a scandal, not just in Africa, but also here!”, Pope Francis continued off the cuff, decrying the “scandal” and the “disgrace” of the coexistence of wealth and misery. “In Kenya – the Pope continued – I met with the Authorities and the Diplomats, as well as with people living in a disadvantaged neighbourhood; I met with the leaders of other religions and Christian denominations, with priests and consecrated persons, and also with young people, many young people! On every occasion, I encouraged all to treasure the great riches of that country: natural and spiritual riches, the earth’s riches and also the new generations, and the values derived from the wisdom of the people”.
