European Council: Brexit is cause of “great concern”. Leaders seek compromise by February

(Brussels) “We had a substantive and constructive discussion on the UK referendum”, said the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, commenting on the Summit that took place in Brussels yesterday. Mr. Tusk did not want to sound “too dramatic” before the meeting, but believes that yesterday was a “make-or-break moment”. “Prime Minister Cameron set out in detail his position”, which seeks to transfer powers back to London in several matters regarding EU integration and asks for reassurances about relations between EU Member States and other States, and about the single market. He then insisted on the different treatment in matters of social benefits that EU workers coming to the UK should be entitled to, but his position on this point – which is clearly contrary to EU treaties – was rejected. Mr. Tusk then reported on the discussion that took place behind closed doors: “Leaders voiced their concerns, but also demonstrated willingness to look for compromises. Building on this positive debate, we agreed to work together to find solutions” to all four points raised by PM Cameron by the European Council of 18-19 February. The UK Prime Minister probably knows that with the referendum he has run into a cul-de-sac, and is now seeking the support of other European leaders.
