Poland: city of Cracow to invest 13 million euros in the WYD

For the next WYD 2016, Cracow will spend about 13 million euros: this has been announced by the city’s mayor, Jacek Majchrowski, who pointed out he is not going to fund any project, except those that fulfil the requirement to “have the citizen services running smoothly”. Half that money will be allocated to upgrade urban transport, toilet rental and operation, the development of a traffic plan, the organisation of parking spaces and the design of a road system. It has also been decided that the roadbed will be remade and the school buildings will be refurbished to accommodate the people who will come to the WYD. About one million euros will be spent to promote and decorate the city, while about 400 thousand euros will be allocated to the operation and organisation of cultural events. 400 thousand euros will be the cost of upgrading first-aid healthcare services for pilgrims. In addition, the city of Cracow supports the development of some railway and road connections with the sanctuary of the Divine Mercy of Lagiewniki and the nearby John Paul II Centre, which is still under construction.
