Denmark: Nativity stable on Aarhus’s high street

A wooden stable has been set up along the high street of Aarhus, Denmark’s second largest city, because “the stable is Jesus becoming a child; His joy and His peace are for everyone”. This is the message that the Churches and ecclesial services of the Danish city want to send through “Jesus at the centre”, an initiative that is going on in the time of Advent. Jesus is “peace amidst conflicts and light in the dark. This light and the peace of Christmas are also for all of us, in Aarhus”. Every afternoon, lots of events will take place around the stable: the Polish community choir will sing today, the men’s choir of St Luke will sing tomorrow and children will go on a guided walk to “meet” the Nativity characters. On 17th December, the Salvation Army will hold a concert with traditional Christmas carols in all the languages spoken in Sweden and, with the help of the Christian Missionary Centre, Gospel stories about Jesus’ birth will be read, with the involvement of the refugees who have recently arrived in the country. On 18th December, young people will hand out hot tea and biscuits along with Christmas wishes and will announce the winners of this week’s lottery. “We, Churches of Aarhus, would like to put Jesus at the centre of our city in the Christmas month. We want to share and emphasise what is relevant to Christianity, rather than our differences”, the organisers explain.
