Poland: Bishops’ message for the Day of Solidarity with the Persecuted Churches

“The social dimension of evil and sin, which leads to the persecution of Christians, demands to be responded to by all the faithful”, the Polish Bishops write in their message for Sunday 8th November, the Day of Solidarity with the Persecuted Churches. Mentioned last Wednesday by Pope Francis at the general audience and launched for the seventh year on end, this time the initiative is dedicated to the Syrian Church. “The persecution of Christians is part of a broader context of increasing violence and aggression, which we see in the surrounding world”, point out the Bishops, who, over these last few days, have received in Warsaw the Patriarch of the Melkite Church, Gregory III Laham, who believes that “Poland can play a key role in the European Union for the member states to speak in one voice about peace in Syria”. Gone to Poland at the invitation of “Help to the Church that Suffers”, the Patriarch thanked his hosts for the help given to the populations affected by the war and emphasised how “important it is” for peace to be reinstated.
