Slovakia: Government plans to resettle christian families from Syria

(Bratislava) – The Slovak government has started a programme for the resettlement of 25 Aramaic-speaking Christian families from Syria to Slovakia. “The project will benefit endangered families currently living in the territories occupied by the Islamic state. Our country wants to integrate them into our society”, explains Prime Minister Robert Fico, adding that the current resettlement act will be based on an agreement between Slovakia and its EU partners. In addition, the Migration Office in Slovakia is arranging the transfer of 151 Syriac Christians from a refugee camp in Iraq, and the government has provided €500,000 to non-governmental organizations as a way to support projects aimed at ending the migration crisis. “We want to welcome these people and provide them with a new home”, says Robert Fico, emphasizing that the aim is to find Christians from Syria who would like to accept the invitation to become permanent residents in Slovakia.
