Germany: Bishops’ Conference, rules to prevent abuse in the Church

The German Bishops’ Conference (DBK) published a document on its website www.dbk.de entitled “Projects for sexual abuse prevention”, which is the result of years of discussion within the Catholic Church in Germany. The brochure offers a series of norms and practical advice on ensuring better protection for children and adolescents from sexual abuse. With the establishment of a Prevention Fund in September 2010, the DBK wished to reach the widest possible public – including non-religious institutions – giving everyone the opportunity to submit prevention projects. In the foreword to the brochure, Mgr. Stephan Ackermann, Bishop of Treviri and spokesperson for the German Bishops’ Conference on issues related to child abuse in the Church, wrote: “We support the projects of the Prevention Fund which are the result of extensive work by different groups of people – the Bishop explained – aimed at boosting the efforts for the protection of children and adolescents from sexual abuse and the creation of a culture of awareness”. Mgr. Ackermann thanked all those engaged in prevention “to ensure a safe environment for children and adolescents”.
