Portugal: “Life and Peace” community prepares Christmas for homeless people

This year too, the “Life and Peace” Portuguese community has decided to invite all homeless people to the Christmas Parties that will be held on 18-20 December at the canteen of the University City of Lisbon. The theme chosen for the events is “Let us build unity together”. “The events on Friday and Saturday will be attended by the people already supported by the teams of our organisation, with whom we have established a relationship of friendship and proximity over the past year”, the organisers explained. “The aim is to celebrate Christmas as if we were one big family”. On Sunday, “all people or families in need or in situations of social vulnerability will be invited: we will offer services related to health issues, legal advice, civil rights, assistance in writing a CV, solutions to basic needs, including hygiene, clothing and food”. In a dedicated “open space for dialogue”, a team of experts will be available to “welcome, motivate and offer advice to participants who will seek the help of the Organisation”. The Christmas Party of the “Life and Peace” community relies on contributions from different sectors of society, particularly the University of Lisbon and the Portuguese Army, as well as donations from private companies. 2,354 invited guests attended the event in 2014, with 3,000 meals served by 1,165 volunteers over the three days.
