Jubilee of Mercy: Germany, four Holy Doors in the diocese of Hamburg

After the 8th December opening, the holy Year of Mercy can be experienced in the archdiocese of Hamburg as well, providing Catholic and non-Catholic pilgrims and devotees with four “holy passages” in as many churches. As well as in St Mary’s Cathedral in Hamburg, the doors will be opened in another three ancient Hanseatic cities by the archbishop of Hamburg, monsignor Stefan Heße, and his auxiliary bishops: in St Ann’s Church in the deanship of Schwerin, in Lubeck in the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and in Kiel in the Church of St Nicholas. Just a few days after St Peter’s in Vatican City, the four doors will be opened for the Jubilee services: on Saturday 12th December the door will be opened at 6.45 pm in Hamburg by monsignor Heße, and in the morning of Sunday 13th December at 10.00 am by the auxiliary bishop, monsignor Werbs, at 10.45 am in Lubeck by the auxiliary bishop Jaschke, and at 11 am in Kiel, also by the archbishop. The four Holy Doors of the diocese will not be the only ones to be open all through the Year of Mercy, but “all communities are called to open the doors of mercy in their churches”, says sister Gudrun Steiß, head of Luxembourg’s pastoral service, because “we enter through the door of the Church to experience God’s mercy, and we are sent through the door to practice charity across the world”.
