Kosovo: protests in front of Parliament. Janjic (political analyst), “a threat to the country’s stability”

“Violence and chaos do not help the democratic development of Kosovo and make the country unstable”: this has been said to SIR by political analyst Dragan Janjic, member of the Media Centre of Pristina, speaking of the massive protests that have taken place in front of Parliament in the last few days. In the last few months, Parliamentary work has been interrupted all the time with tear gas and OC gas by the opposition forces asking to repeal the package of agreements with Serbia, under which the Association of Serbian Municipalities would be created. “Our opponents are afraid of the greater independence that mostly Serbian Municipalities would be granted”, explains Janjic, adding that “however the association will be under Kosovar law, while Pristina can have its own international telephone country code and the bridge of Mitrovica, so far controlled by Serbians, will be opened”. “The agreement has been entered into under EU pressure with painful compromises by Belgrade and Pristina”, states the political analyst, who believes that “now Brussels will have to step in as a mediator”. In a joint statement of the Western forces (USA, Great Britain, France, Germany and Italy), “the protests have been condemned for using violence and for taking advantage of the situation for political purposes”.
