The Bulgarian Orthodox Church now has its own profile on social media. The stated aim is to respond to the need to provide “useful and timely information” about the life of the Orthodox Church in Bulgaria. It was the Holy Synod who made the decision at the end of February to establish a more direct communication with the faithful, the media and society. The profile, which has just been unveiled, is called “Bulgarian Orthodox Church – Bulgarian Patriarchate”; it provides news, published on the official website, as well as other useful information about the life of the Church, practices for the Lenten season which has just begun, and other ecclesial initiatives. “People convert when they see an outstretched hand, and even on social media, we cannot but reach out”, the Holy Synod explains. The Bulgarian Orthodox Church, headed by Patriarch Neofit, is the major denomination in Bulgaria, embraced by 82% of the population, whilst Catholics and Muslims account for 0.6% and 12% of the population, respectively.
