(Strasburg) Lively, at times fierce debate at the EU Parliament, which today is debating and voting CETA (Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement) between the EU and Canada. EPP, Liberals and Conservatives are in favour of it. Social Democrats are divided. European United Left, Greens and nationalists are clearly against it. CETA would actually remove all import export duties, fostering trade flows between the EU and Canada, and supporting Europe’s GDP. Those against CETA are concerned about European companies; they talk about invasion of multinational companies, workers’ rights, protection of consumers, small-sized companies, and environment. In her speech, EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström illustrated the positive points of the agreement: “The most modern and advanced trade agreement ever negotiated by the EU”. Outside the EU Parliament, a demonstration (youth, above all) against CETA was going on: “Don’t run over peoples”, demonstrators shouted; “Citizens before profits”.
